Atticus is a single father of Jem and Scout Finch. His wife unfortunately passed away. He loves Jem and Scout a lot, he also tries to do what is best for Jem and Scout. Atticus is always teaching his kids to be respectful and have manners. Atticus is also very quiet and doesn't like to get in any chaos. He is a lawyer who tries to help Tom Robinson with his case. When he tries to help Tom Robinson who is a African American with the case Atticus is exposing him and his family to danger because he is backing up a black male. Atticus tries to hide that fact that he’s racist, so his kids do not end up like him. Just like Atticus stated “best way to clear the air is to have it all out in the open”. this quote means that if you want to think straight just let everything go and not to worry. |

Calpurnia
Calpurnia started working for Atticus after the death of Scout and Jem’s mother. Next to Atticus she is the most important role model to Scout and Jem. Calpurnia taught Scout how to read, and acted like their mother. For example, when Jem was acting out against Scout, “Baby,’ said Calpurnia, ‘I just can’t help it if Mister Jem’s growin’ up. He's gonna want to be off to himself a lot now, doin’ whatever boys do, so you just come right on in the kitchen when you feel lonesome.” (153-154 Lee). In this scene Calpurnia is acting motherly towards Scout, and it shows that Calpurnia cares about her and acts like Scout’s mother. It was mentioned that Calpurnia was at least a few years older than Atticus. One time Jem and Scout were able to see a bit of Calpurnia’s life when coming with her to her church and that she has a son. It was revealed that she talks differently when talking to white people and talks differently to African Americans, she explained that she talks the way she talks to fit in better. Calpurnia is probably grateful that she is surrounded by non-racist and fair people. She teaches Scout and Jem important lessons and helps them whenever they need help. Overall, Calpurnia is an important character to Jem and Scout and allows the reader to make the bridge between the African American people and the white people throughout the story. |
