Entertainments in the 1930s
Sports was definitely a way for people to be stress free while having fun. With the Great Depression during the 1930s people needed a way to entertain themselves and they did that by playing sports. The sports they would play would be baseball and boxing because those were the most famous sports during the 1930s according to reference.com. Not only would they play baseball or boxing but they would also watch baseball and boxing. Most people would play baseball instead of watching because of the Great Depression and because of the Great depression “baseball owners feared the worst. They would have trouble drawing fans” said historyrat.wordpress.com. They were having trouble drawing fans because when the stock market crashed people were too busy looking for a job. Historyrat.wordpress.com also stated “ people would still come to the ballpark if only to forget about their own troubles for a while.” This quote tells us that during the 1930s because would use sports as a way to relax and forget about the bad things that had happened. Fashion in the 1930s was very formal and unique. Fashion was a way for people to forget about the hard stuff they were going though like the great depression.. According to RetroWaste.com womens didn't like to show too much skin in the 1930s and wore dress all day, at home and when going out. Womens mostly wore dresses with flowers because it was popular during the 1930s. They would also wear Coats, scarves, and hats with fur because it was also popular. Fashion for women was quite hard to follow for example Vintagedancer.com stated that women's would have to have “ “high waist’ fitted hips, longer mid calf or floor length hemline, high neckline, and wide shoulders” Womens wore long skirts or long dresses with tiny waists to look more elegant. Fashion for men was a bit more different. Men mostly wore black and white suits But still men couldn’t afford to buy Suits because the great depression but men out of work. The black and white suits were patted on the shoulders and had tapering sleeves. They also had a v-shaped neckline according to umv.edu. Also the trench coat became popular during the 1930s and a belt around the waist. “Men with suits would also wear suspenders, hats with dark colors and patterns.” stated prezi.com. In the 1930s people had lots to do to keep them entertained and busy. Entertainment was a way for people to not worry about cops and money. What they would do for entertainment wouldn't coast much according to livinghistoryfarm.com. For example, there was a lot of movies people could watch for example king kong, Snow white and the seven dwarfs, The Wizard of Oz and many more. If they would like to watch a movie at the theater Movie tickets were only five cents. Not only would they watch movies but they would also watch sports. Many celebrities made their debut during the 1930s and walt disney animation become popular. According to Prezi.com, Kids liked to read spiderman, Popeye, and the little orphan annie. They would also love to play board games and read comics and play card games. They would also play card games with their neighbors. People would also do art to entertain themselves they would also use art to show how they are feeling. They would also listen to music and with the music they would dance. According to prezi.com they said “Dance influenced from Europe, people danced the Jitterbug and swing Dance.” they would also sing just like livinghistoryfarm.com said “ singing telegram were popular.” Entertainment in the 1930s was very similar to entertainment now. All in all, there was definitely a lot of ways to feel relaxed and entertain yourself during the 1930s even though there was a lot of chaos. One way they would entertain themselves was through playing sports, they would either play or watch sports. With some much going on during the 1930s people still found ways to dress elegant and made fashion fun. The same thing goes for entertainment people found many ways to have fun and forget about the bad stuff. |
